  • English version

The video excerpt Le milieu est bleu responds to the exhibition by Ulla von Brandenburg at the Palais de Tokyo where all the spread-out elements in the museum give credibility to the performance filmed in the Peuple’s theatre in Bussang. Most of it is done off-stage, in a setting where fabrics, plain or in patchworks, stitch up bits of intrinsic history to this community. Close to a Commedia dell’Arte aesthetics where the quilts refers to Harlequin, the ropes to the manipulation of XVIIth century curtains and theater sets, the textile takes a crucial place in its function of mediator which gives rhythm to the passage between acts and characters. The arrangement of the textiles therefore sequences the entire video through a popular sung and danced ritual of this “micro-society” which evolves from a closed environment to the exteriorization of its quest towards a scenic background that opens on the forest.
“As the mirror has two sides, the one that reflects us and the one that hides behind, the curtain has two sides. At the circus you can fold it up very small and unfold it to make a big top. I like to camouflage or change space with poor or very simple means to create an elsewhere. Fabric is the ideal, inexpensive, easy to carry, flexible way. It is a nomadic material.” Ulla von Brandenburg
