Cet extrait du film « The Western Isles » réalisé par Terence Egan Bishop en 1941, présente un groupe de femmes, dirigé par une femme plus âgée, qui s’adonnent au foulage d’un drap de laine. Frottement de l’étoffe dans l’eau savonneuse, puis battage du drap de laine : ces mouvements répétitifs effectués en groupe composent une joyeuse chorégraphie, qui s’accorde sur un chant entraînant. Il s’agit d’un « òran-luaidh » en gaélique écossais, ou « chant de foulage » : un chant de travail traditionnellement entonné lors de cette activité textile.
« The Western Isles » fait partie des archives de courts documentaires du British Council réalisés durant les années 1940. This extract of the film « The Western Isles » directed by Terence Egan Bishop in 1941 presents a group of women led by an elderly woman who are fulling wool. They are rubbing the fabric in soapy water, then beating it : those repetitive movements performed in group compose a joyful choreography, which goes along with a lively song. This type of song is called « òran-luaidh » in Scottish Gaelic or « waulking song » : a work song traditionally sung during this activity.
